How to use this mixed numbers drag and drop in the classroom

Mixed numbers sit at the edge of what most upper-primary students find comfortable โ€” they look like two numbers stuck together and that's often how kids treat them. The drag-and-drop format forces students to connect the symbol (1ยพ) to a visual quantity (one whole bar shaded plus three-quarters of another), which is the move that makes the rest of mixed-number work click.

Concept hook

Project the deck and start by asking students what they think 1ยฝ means. Take all answers (you'll get "one and a half", "1.5", "one half twice", sometimes "eleven over two"). Then drag the card together as a class. The visual proof short-circuits the misconceptions in 30 seconds.

Independent practice

Push to Google Classroom for a 20-minute station. Walk the room watching for students who can match 2ยฝ but freeze on 1โ…“ โ€” the second one requires the same logic but with an unfamiliar denominator, which is the moment the procedural shortcut breaks down.

Pair conversion task

Once students finish the deck, pair them up. Partner A picks a mixed number card; partner B has to write the equivalent improper fraction. Then swap. Five minutes per pair. Converts the visual match into the symbolic procedure both directions.

Because the activity gives instant feedback and self-corrects, it's a strong sub-plan slot for a relief teacher who isn't a maths specialist. Leave instructions: "Students copy the deck from Google Classroom, work through it, screenshot their best slide".

What it builds

Mixed-number quantity sense.Symbolic mixed numbers (1ยพ) get read as "one and three quarters" without students ever picturing the quantity. This activity forces the visual, which in turn anchors every comparison, ordering, and conversion task that follows.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

  • 1ยฝ = 1.5 confusion.Students who've seen decimals sometimes drag 1ยฝ to a bar showing 1.5 tenths shaded. Surfaces the gap between mixed-number form and decimal form.
  • Adding numerator and whole. A student matching 2ยพ may count 2 + 3 = 5 shaded quarters โ€” losing the whole-number significance.
  • Denominator drift. When the bar model shows the second whole split into a DIFFERENT number of parts than the fraction specifies, some students still try to match โ€” a useful trap built into the deck.

Differentiation

  • Going slower: isolate mixed numbers with halves and quarters only (1ยฝ, 2ยผ, 3ยพ) until the visual anchor is secure.
  • Going faster: ask students to write the improper fraction for each mixed number they match, and check it against the improper fractions deck.
  • Extension: students design a slide showing a mixed number they invent, then swap and verify. Strong consolidation activity.
