How to use this improper fractions drag and drop in the classroom

Improper fractions are where many Year 5โ€“6 students wobble โ€” they've spent years being told fractions are "less than one", then suddenly meet 5/3 and 7/4. This activity normalises improper fractions visually first (bar models that extend past one whole), which is the move that sticks.

Introduce, don't test

Project the first slide on the IWB before you've formally introduced the term "improper fraction". Ask students to drag a card and explain what they see. Most will be surprised that a fraction can show more than one whole โ€” let that surprise be the hook for the lesson.

1:1 device practice

Push to Google Classroom and let students work through all four sub- activities (graphical, vocabulary, number line, combined) at their own pace. The graphical-to-number-line transition is the hardest jump โ€” walk the room and look for students stuck on activity 3.

Conversion preview

Once students are matching 5/3 to a bar model showing 1โ…” worth of shading, you can introduce mixed numbers as "another way to write the same thing" โ€” the visual proof is already on screen. Much stronger than introducing the conversion procedure cold.

Stretch task

For students who finish the digital deck quickly, ask them to write three improper fractions of their own and sketch the bar models โ€” then swap with a partner who has to verify. Forces them to apply the concept in reverse.

What it builds

Recognition that fractions can exceed one wholeโ€” the single biggest conceptual block in upper primary fractions. Once a student can see 5/3 as "one whole and two-thirds more" on a bar model, the symbolic procedure for converting to a mixed number becomes obvious rather than a memorised trick.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

  • "Improper means wrong." Many students treat an improper fraction as something to be fixed. The bar-model representation makes it clearly a valid quantity.
  • Counting both shaded wholes as one fraction.Looking at a bar model showing one full whole + 2/3 of another, some students say "3/3 + 2/3 = 5/6" โ€” losing the denominator on the way.
  • Number-line placement errors.Students confidently place 1/2 at the right spot but freeze on 7/3 because they've never had to extend past 1 before.

Differentiation

  • Going slower:stick to activity 1 (graphical) until the visual idea of "more than one whole" is secure.
  • Going faster: pair the activity with the Mixed Numbers drag-and-drop and ask students to convert each improper fraction they match.
  • Extension:students invent improper fractions for a given mixed number (e.g. "write three improper fractions equal to 2ยผ"). Tests both directions.
