Card games to play with improper fractions and mixed numbers

This deck pairs every improper fraction with its mixed-number equivalent — 5/3 with 1⅔, 7/4 with 1¾, 9/2 with 4½, and so on. That structure means classic matching games turn into conversion practice: every match a student makes is a fluency rep on the improper-to-mixed swap.

Conversion Snap

Two players deal alternating cards onto a pile. When an improper fraction and its mixed-number equivalent appear consecutively, snap. Faster than running conversion drills on the board and surfaces who's converting in their head and who's guessing from card position.

Convert & Claim

Deal all the improper-fraction cards face-up in the middle. Mixed-number cards go into a draw pile. Players take turns drawing a mixed number and claiming its matching improper-fraction card from the middle — but only if they can say the conversion out loud before grabbing it. Most cards at the end wins.

Mixed-Number War

Each player flips one card; the larger value wins both. The catch is that one player's card might be improper (5/2) and the other's might be mixed (2¼), so kids have to compare across forms — exactly the skill they need for ordering on a number line.

Number Line Build

Tape a long strip of paper to the floor marked 0 to 5. Hand each player a small stack of cards and ask them to place each card on the line in the right spot. Self-correcting when peers spot mistakes. Strong consolidation activity at the end of a unit.

Sort by Whole-Number Part

Group all cards by their whole-number part — 1s with 1s, 2s with 2s, etc. Fast sort that surfaces students who haven't yet seen how the numerator of an improper fraction relates to its whole-number part in mixed form (i.e. 7/4 sits with 1¾ because 7 ÷ 4 = 1 remainder 3).

Conversion fluencybetween improper fractions and mixed numbers — the specific skill that Year 5–6 students are routinely tested on. The deck takes a procedure ("divide and write the remainder over the denominator") and turns it into pattern recognition, which is much faster and stickier than memorising the rule.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

• "Improper fractions are wrong." A surprising number of students think 5/3 is an error to be fixed, not a valid representation. The deck normalises seeing both forms as equally correct.
• Adding instead of converting. Some students see 1¾ and compute 1 + 7 = 8 over 4 instead of (1 × 4) + 3 = 7 over 4. Watching kids match cards exposes this fast.
• Ignoring the denominator on conversion.Confident numerator manipulation but losing track of what the "parts" are — they convert 9/4 to 2¼ correctly but can't say why the denominator stays as 4.

Differentiation

• Going slower: use only cards with denominators 2, 3, and 4 — easier mental conversion.
• Going faster: mix in the Proper Fractions deck so students compare values across proper, improper, AND mixed forms in the same game.
• Extension: ask each student to write down five new improper fractions and their mixed-number equivalents, then add their cards to the deck. Verifies real fluency without a test.
