How to use this mixed numbers cut and paste worksheet

Mixed numbers (1ยฝ, 2ยพ, 3โ…“) are the bridge between fractions and decimals in Year 5โ€“6. The cut-and-paste format slows students down enough to actually think about what "one whole and a bit" looks like visually, rather than just reading the symbols off and moving on.

Anchor the symbol-to-quantity link

Many students can read "1ยฝ" out loud but couldn't draw it on demand. This worksheet flips the direction โ€” students see the visual first and choose the symbol โ€” which builds the bidirectional fluency that real fraction work requires.

Independent station

Run as one rotation in a Year 5โ€“6 fractions block. 15โ€“20 minutes. The answer key on the back lets early finishers self-check before joining the next rotation.

Whole-class introduction

Project the worksheet on the IWB and complete the first two examples together, narrating your reasoning out loud: "One whole bar is shaded, plus three out of four parts of the second โ€” that's 1ยพ." Then hand it out for students to complete the rest.

Bridge to improper fractions

Once students have matched and pasted, ask them to write the equivalent improper fraction next to each one. Converts a recognition task into a conversion task with no extra worksheet needed โ€” and grounds the conversion procedure in the visual model they've just committed to.

What it builds

Quantity sense for fractions greater than one. Most student errors with mixed numbers come from manipulating the symbol without picturing the quantity (e.g. ordering 1ยพ and 1โ…— wrong because โ…— "looks bigger" than ยพ). This worksheet anchors the symbol to the visual, which fixes the underlying issue.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

  • Reading the fractional part as a separate value.A student sees 1ยพ and thinks "one and three-fourths" as two independent numbers rather than a single quantity.
  • 1ยฝ = 1.5 confusion.Students who've seen decimals sometimes interpret 1ยฝ as 1.5 and try to match it to a model showing one-and-a-half tenths shaded.
  • Ignoring the denominator on the second whole. When the model shows the second bar split into a different number of parts than the fraction specifies, some students still match โ€” revealing they were only checking the numerator.

Differentiation

  • Going slower: use only halves and quarters (1ยฝ, 2ยผ, 3ยพ) until the structure is secure.
  • Going faster: students write the equivalent improper fraction next to each match.
  • Extension: students order all pasted mixed numbers from smallest to largest, using the visual proof to justify.
