How to use this drag and drop in the classroom

Drag-and-drop Google Slides activities are at their best when you can see the screens — on a 1:1 device classroom, on the projector, or shared on the IWB. The activity gives immediate feedback (a card snaps to the target or bounces back), so kids self-correct without you having to mark anything live.

5-minute warm-up

Project the slides on the board and call on three or four students to come up and drag a fraction card to its matching area model. Low-stakes opener: kids who got the previous lesson demonstrate; kids who didn't get a second free run at the idea before the new content lands.

Independent station

Push a copy into Google Classroom (one click — students get their own editable version) and run it as one rotation in your fractions block. Twenty minutes is enough for most Year 3–5 students to work through the deck once and have a second go at the ones they missed.

Talking pairs

Pair a confident student with a less confident one. One drags, the other explains whythe area model matches the fraction. The explanation step is where the conceptual work happens — kids who can drag the right card but can't articulate why have learned the wrong skill, and pairing surfaces that immediately.

Homework / catch-up

Because it's free Google Slides with no login beyond Google, the copy link works at home. Useful for kids who missed the lesson, kids building speed, or parents asking what they can do over the holidays without paying a subscription.

What it builds

The activity targets the bridge from symbolic fraction notation (1/2, 3/4, 2/5) to area-modelrepresentation. Students who can recite "two-fifths" but can't recognise it as two of five equal parts on a bar haven't built the underlying part-whole understanding yet — and the drag-and-drop format makes that gap visible in a way worksheets don't.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

• Numerator-as-shaded, denominator-as-unshaded — e.g. matching 2/3 to a bar showing 2 shaded parts and 3 unshaded parts instead of 2 of 3 equal parts in total.
• Bigger denominator = bigger fraction — matching 1/3 to a model showing the bar split into 8.
• Equal-share confusion— matching to models where the parts aren't actually equal in size.

Differentiation

• Going faster: ask students to write an equivalent fraction next to each correct match.
• Going slower: start with just unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5) and add the rest once those are secure.
• Extension:ask students to design one extra slide showing a fraction the activity doesn't cover.
