The 5 PhET fraction simulators I actually use (and what I pair them with)
If you teach primary or secondary fractions and you haven't found PhET yet, this post is going to make your year a lot easier. The PhET project at the University of Colorado Boulder has been quietly building the best free interactive science and maths simulations in the world for two decades. Their fraction sims are research-based, browser-native, and, the detail that matters most, they were designed by people who've actually watched kids struggle with fractions.
I've been using PhET sims in primary and secondary classrooms for years. What follows is the honest version: which five sims I actually use, when each one fits in a fractions unit, and the gaps you'll want to fill alongside them. No sales pitch for PhET, they don't need one. And as much as I can manage, no sales pitch for No Drama Koala either; I'll mention our games where they genuinely complement a PhET lesson and not anywhere else.
A 30-second orientation if you're new to PhET
PhET sims live at phet.colorado.edu. They're free, no login required, and run in any modern browser, including the Chromebooks most Australian primary and secondary schools are standardised on. Each sim has a clean teacher page with downloadable lesson plans and student handouts, almost all of which have been contributed by actual teachers and peer-reviewed.
The fraction sims I cover below are all HTML5 (the legacy Flash and Java versions have been retired). Some sims have multiple "screens" selectable via tabs at the bottom, kids often miss those, so if you're demoing on the projector, walk through each screen with them.
The five fraction sims in the order I use them
The ordering below maps to a typical Year 2 → Year 6 progression. You don't need to use every sim every year, pick the two or three that match where your class is right now.
1. Build a Fraction
Year 2 – Year 3Start here. Students drag pizza slices and rectangle blocks into shape outlines that have a target fraction underneath, “build 1/4”, “build 2/3”. The game progresses through levels that quietly get harder.
What makes this sim so good is that it forces students to physically partition the whole themselves. There's no pre-divided shape they pick from; they decide how many parts the whole splits into, then how many of those parts to shade. Kids who can answer “what fraction is shaded?” on a worksheet sometimes can't build “3/4” from a blank rectangle, and this sim surfaces that gap in about ninety seconds.
Use it as a 15-minute independent rotation early in a fractions unit. Walk the room watching for students who shade parts that aren't actually equal in size. That's your next mini- lesson.
2. Fractions: Intro
Year 3 – Year 4Once students can partition a whole, this sim teaches them to read a fraction off a partitioned shape. You set the denominator with a counter, then slide a control to fill the numerator. The fraction notation updates live alongside the shape, circles, horizontal bars, vertical bars, and a number-line representation.
The number-line tab is what makes this sim a keeper. Kids who comfortably write “3/4” for a shaded shape often freeze when asked where 3/4 sits between 0 and 1. The sim makes the connection visible without ever needing you to say it.
Project it on the IWB and run it together as a 10-minute starter. Ask students to predict where 5/6 will land on the number line BEFORE you slide the control. The predictions surface every misconception you'd want to teach into.
3. Fractions: Equality
Year 4 – Year 5This is the gem of the fraction sims. Two fractions sit on opposite sides of a balance scale. Students adjust the numerators and denominators; the scale tips visibly when they aren't equivalent and balances when they are.
Equivalence is the concept primary and lower-secondary students rote-learn most aggressively and understand the least. They'll cheerfully tell you “2/4 equals 1/2” while having no real sense of WHY beyond “you divide both by 2”. This sim makes the WHY concrete, when the visual representations balance, the fractions are the same quantity. Suddenly “equivalent” stops being a procedure and starts being a real property.
The follow-up I always run after this sim is Fracman, a Pac-Man-style game where students eat only the fractions equivalent to a target value. The Equality sim builds the concept; Fracman builds the recognition speed under pressure. Different jobs, both essential.
4. Fraction Matcher
Year 4 – Year 5Game-format consolidation. Students drag fraction representations (shaded shapes, symbolic notation, mixed numbers) onto two pans of a balance, the pans tip when the values don't match, and stay level when they do. Levels ratchet difficulty up; later rounds mix numeric and pictorial representations.
What I like about Fraction Matcher is that it normalises the idea that the same quantity can wear many different costumes, a half-shaded pie, 2/4 written as a symbol, 0.5 if you set the level high enough. Students who can solve equivalence on paper often stumble when the equivalent cards LOOK different. This sim grinds that gap down.
Use it as a 20-minute station rotation after the Equality sim has done the conceptual work. Pair students up, one drags, one explains why the values match or don't. The explanation step is where the deepest learning happens; without it, kids will successfully match by trial-and-error without ever doing the maths.
5. Fractions: Mixed Numbers
Year 5 – Year 6Same interface as Fractions: Intro, but extended to numerators larger than the denominator. Students see 5/3 visually as one whole shape plus two-thirds of another, the “more than one” concept that breaks so many Year 5 fraction lessons.
The visual proof here is genuinely powerful. Most students reach improper fractions thinking they're some kind of error to be fixed by converting to a mixed number. This sim makes the improper fraction a legitimate representation of a quantity. It's just one whole and a bit, shown directly on a shape. The conversion to mixed number then becomes obvious rather than a procedure to memorise.
Best used in a structured 25-minute lesson: 5 minutes demonstrating, 15 minutes student exploration on devices, 5 minutes reflection where students explain what they noticed.
What PhET doesn't do well
I want to be honest about this, because every tool has limits and knowing PhET's helps you build a complete fractions toolkit.
- PhET sims load slowly on weaker devices. School-issued Chromebooks from 2018 or earlier sometimes take 20-30 seconds to load a sim. If you have a class on older hardware, factor that into lesson timing or pre-load the sims before students sit down.
- No multiplayer.PhET is purposefully an individual concept-exploration tool. There aren't live class leaderboards, no “join a room” mode, no head-to-head play. For the social-competitive layer that gets reluctant students engaged, you'll need something else.
- Limited fluency-building.PhET teaches concepts brilliantly; it doesn't drill recall speed. A student who understands equivalence after the Equality sim still needs hundreds of fluency repetitions before they can recognise it under exam pressure. That's where arcade-style games and printable card decks come in.
- Generic year-level targeting.PhET sims don't map cleanly onto specific AC v9 or Common Core codes, you have to do that mapping yourself. The downloadable teacher resources help, but they're mostly US-curriculum-aligned.
What I pair PhET with
A complete primary or secondary fractions toolkit needs three layers: conceptual depth, fluency repetition, and printable practice for screen-free sessions. PhET nails layer one. Here's what fills the other two.
- For fluency speed: Fracman for equivalent fractions, Fraction Snap for cross-representation recognition, Equivalent Quiz for straight drill.
- For classroom multiplayer: Fracman LIVE and Snap LIVE. Host a room, share a 6-letter code, your whole class joins from phones or laptops. The piece PhET deliberately doesn't do.
- For printable / off-screen practice: our cut-and-paste worksheets, printable fraction playing cards (with built-in classic card-game rules), and self-checking domino loops. Hand-on, screen-free, sub-friendly.
A weekly fraction-lesson rotation that uses both
Here's the pattern I keep coming back to when I plan a week of fractions. Adjust the year-level expectations as needed; the structure works from Year 3 up.

The point of the rotation isn't that it's the only way to do it, it's that each day plays to a different tool's strength. PhET on Monday for the WHY, drill for the speed, printable for the focus, multiplayer for the social hook. Mix and match.
