How to use this in the classroom
Open-ended fraction construction tool. Students partition a shape into equal parts and shade the target fraction. Excellent for the moment students first meet a new fraction concept β they build it physically before working with the symbol.
What it builds
Part-whole partitioning. The single most important skill in early fraction learning: dividing a whole into equal parts. The game forces students to PHYSICALLY divide the shape rather than just looking at one that's already divided.
Common misconceptions it surfaces
- Unequal partitioning. Students who 'shade 3/4' by colouring three of four parts that aren't actually equal reveal the gap in the equal-parts concept
- Wrong-denominator partitioning. Asked for 2/5, students split into 4 or 6 parts because they've grasped the numerator but not the denominator
- Drawing the symbol instead of the model. Some students sketch '3/4' on the canvas rather than partitioning β useful surface for the difference between symbol and quantity
Differentiation
- Going slower: Pre-divided shape; students just shade the right number of parts.
- Going faster: Students must partition AND shade with no guides.
- Extension: Students build a fraction equivalent to the target without using the same denominator.
