How to use this in the classroom
Quick fraction-of-shape recognition drill. Shape appears partially shaded; students enter the fraction it represents. 5-minute station rotation; strong for Year 2–4 students consolidating fraction notation.
What it builds
Reading a fraction off a visual representation. The reverse direction of Fraction Builder — instead of constructing the fraction from the symbol, students extract the symbol from the construction.
Common misconceptions it surfaces
- Counting shaded as numerator, unshaded as denominator — reading a half-shaded bar as '2/2' or '1/1' because they're counting separately
- Counting only the visible 'parts' — missing one segment because it's unshaded, reading 3/4 as 3/3
- Reversing numerator and denominator — entering 4/3 instead of 3/4 because they wrote total first
Differentiation
- Going slower: Unit fractions only (½, ⅓, ¼, ⅕).
- Going faster: Equivalents required — student enters the simplest form of the shaded fraction.
- Extension: Students write the equivalent decimal and percentage alongside the fraction.
