How to use this in the classroom

Solo decimal-equivalence card-flip drill. Students see two decimal representations and tap SNAP when they're the same value. Surfaces the classic 0.5 = 0.50 = 0.500 confusion in 60 seconds.

What it builds

Decimal place-value sense. Students learn that trailing zeros don't change a decimal's value, that 0.5 and 0.50 are the same quantity, and that 0.05 is NOT the same as 0.5. Foundational for every later decimal operation.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

• Length-of-decimal = value. Students reject 0.5 = 0.50 because 'one has more digits'
• Zero-as-empty errors. Students think 0.05 is bigger than 0.5 because '5 hundredths sounds bigger than 5 tenths'
• Reading decimals as whole numbers. '0.50' read as 'fifty' so students think it's larger than 0.5 read as 'five'

Differentiation

• Going slower: Restrict to tenths and hundredths.
• Going faster: Include thousandths and decimal-fraction equivalences.
• Extension: After each round, students write the decimal in expanded form.
