How to use this in the classroom
Number-line ordering drill for decimals. Students drag decimals into ascending or descending order. Especially valuable for Year 4β5 where ordering decimals is a frequent assessment item β and a frequent error source.
What it builds
Decimal magnitude comparison. The skill 'is 0.5 bigger or smaller than 0.45?' looks simple but trips many students β they compare digit by digit as if the decimals were whole numbers. This game forces real value comparison.
Common misconceptions it surfaces
- Comparing as integers. Students rank 0.7, 0.65, 0.5 as 0.65 > 0.7 because '65 is bigger than 7'
- Length-bias ordering. Students think the longest decimal is the biggest (so 0.234 > 0.7)
- Aligning-from-the-left. Students compare 0.45 vs 0.5 by looking at the first decimal digit (4 < 5) β correct here, wrong for 0.5 vs 0.45
Differentiation
- Going slower: Order 3 decimals at a time with the same number of decimal places.
- Going faster: Order 6+ decimals with mixed places (0.5, 0.45, 0.453, 0.5).
- Extension: Students sketch each decimal on a 0-1 number line after ordering to verify visually.
