How to use this in the classroom
Place a decimal on a number line. Students develop the visual intuition for where decimals 'live' between 0 and 1, between whole numbers, etc. Strong as a Year 4 introduction; useful as Year 5 revision.
What it builds
Decimal magnitude on the number line. The skill that decimal operations rely on β without it, students can compute 0.3 + 0.4 = 0.7 procedurally but have no idea whether the answer should be closer to half or to one.
Common misconceptions it surfaces
- Endpoint blindness. Students place 0.5 way left or way right because they're not using the 0 and 1 markers as anchors
- Hundredths underestimation. Students place 0.45 at the same position as 0.5 because the hundredths digit is 'just a decoration'
- Equal-spacing-of-tenths errors. Treating the gap from 0 to 0.1 as different from 0.4 to 0.5
Differentiation
- Going slower: Tenths-only with marked number line (every 0.1 labelled).
- Going faster: Hundredths and thousandths on an unmarked line.
- Extension: Students estimate position before checking β develops self-monitoring.
