Common misconceptions it surfaces
- Endpoint blindness — Students placing 0.5 way left or way right reveal they're not using the 0 and 1 endpoints as reference. The drift mechanic punishes this directly.
- Equal-spacing-of-tenths errors — Placing 0.3 at the same distance from 0.2 as 0.5 is from 0.4 should be intuitive but often isn't — students reveal whether they actually see the line as continuous or as separate decimal labels.
- Hundredths underestimation — When the target is 0.45 and students place it at 0.5, they're treating the hundredths digit as decorative. Repeated rounds with hundredths targets force precision.
Differentiation
- Going slower: Stick to tenths targets (0.2, 0.5, 0.7) before introducing hundredths.
