Fraction Representation Match

How to use this in the classroom

Matching game where students pair a fraction with its various representations (bar model, pie chart, number line, vocab). Strong diagnostic — reveals which representation each student finds most/least comfortable. Year 3–5 station rotation.

What it builds

Representational flexibility. The big idea: a fraction is a quantity, not a particular drawing or symbol. Students who match 1/3 to the bar model but reject the pie chart are showing exactly the gap to target with explicit instruction.

Common misconceptions it surfaces

• Different shape = different fraction. Students who can match 1/3 to a horizontal bar but not to a pie reveal an underlying visual rigidity
• Wrong equal-parts counting. Matching 1/3 to a shape with three unequal parts (because 'one out of three')
• Vocab-without-meaning. Students match 'one third' correctly but can't explain what it means when prompted

Differentiation

• Going slower: Stick to halves and quarters across all representations before introducing thirds and fifths.
• Going faster: Include non-unit fractions and mixed numbers.
• Extension: Students draw a sixth representation for each fraction (musical bars, recipe portions, etc.).
