How to use this unit fractions domino loop in the classroom

A domino loop is a self-checking activity disguised as a puzzle. Each domino has a fraction symbol on one half and a graphical model on the other — students place them end-to-end so the model on one domino matches the symbol on the next. When the chain forms a complete loop with no leftovers, the activity is right. No answer key needed.

Cooperative table activity

Put a group of 3–4 students around a single set of dominoes. Each student picks up a few cards and they collectively build the loop on the table. Forces discussion — "does this one match yours?" — and surfaces disagreements where the maths is happening.

Independent learning station

Run as a single-student station. Because the loop self-validates, you don't need to mark anything — the student knows immediately whether they got it right. Frees you to teach a small group elsewhere.

Fast finisher / early morning task

• Local-only matching.Students sometimes match two dominoes correctly without checking that the overall loop closes — when it doesn't close, they have to backtrack and find the error. That backtracking IS the conceptual work.
• Unequal-parts blindness.Students who haven't internalised "equal parts" will happily match 1/4 to a model with four unequal segments — the loop fails to close and surfaces this misconception.
• Confusing similar fractions. 1/3 and 1/4 visually look close enough that students rushing through may swap them; the loop refuses to close until they slow down.

Differentiation

• Going slower: use only the first six dominoes (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) as a shorter starter loop before introducing the full set.
• Going faster: time the activity — students try to beat their own best time on subsequent attempts.
• Extension: ask students to design two additional dominoes that could extend the loop, using fractions not in the original set.
