How to use this in the classroom
Integer Golf is mini golf for negative numbers. Birdie counts as −1, par is 0, bogey is +1, double bogey +2 — the running net total adds and subtracts integers across 18 holes of increasing difficulty. Most negative score wins. The scoring system is the maths; you can't play without doing the integer arithmetic.
Negative numbers introduction
Strong opening activity for a Year 5–6 integers unit. Students intuitively understand 'more negative is winning' and build a feel for how negatives combine before formal rules are introduced.
Whole-class scoreboard
Project on the IWB and rotate students at the controls each hole. Track scores on a class scoreboard — running totals across multiple holes consolidate addition and subtraction of integers in context.
Independent fluency
20-minute station rotation. Students complete the full 9-hole round and compare scores. The competitive element keeps Year 5–6 students engaged through what is actually integer-arithmetic drill.
What it builds
Integer arithmetic in a meaningful context. Students who can solve '−3 + 5' on a worksheet often fail when the same operation appears inside a problem. Integer Golf embeds the operation in a goal students care about (winning the round), which makes the arithmetic stick.
Common misconceptions it surfaces
- More-is-better assumption — Students new to negatives often think a higher score is better. The scoreboard quickly trains them out of this — the kid with −4 is winning, the kid with +6 is losing.
- Subtraction of a negative — Calculating the change when going from −3 to +1 reveals whether students understand that subtracting a negative is addition. The running totals force this calculation repeatedly.
- Ordering errors with negatives — Ranking the class at the end requires ordering scores like −4, −1, 0, +2, +5. Students who put −4 above −1 because '4 > 1' surface the magnitude-vs-position confusion in negatives.
Differentiation
- Going slower: Play 3 holes at a time and discuss running totals between holes. Builds confidence with smaller integer ranges.
- Going faster: Full 9 holes solo with strict par. Highest-difficulty mode introduces holes-in-one (eagles, −2) for double-negative reasoning.
- Cross-game challenge: Students estimate their total BEFORE each round and compare to actual. Builds prediction skill alongside computation.
