Fractions Reset – 8 Week Small-Group Online Program
Fractions Reset – Year 7 & 8
An 8-Week Small-Group Program- Commencing Week Beginning 2nd Feb 2026.
Fractions are often where maths starts to feel confusing - especially in Years 7 and 8. The impacts can be long-lasting, with international research highlighting fraction understanding as a key predictor of future success in algebra and higher-level mathematics.
This 8-week program is designed to help students rebuild fraction understanding properly, so they feel calmer, more confident, and more capable when working with fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and beyond.
Rather than rushing ahead, we focus on the core ideas that make everything else work.
What students will work on
Over 8 weeks, students strengthen their understanding of:
-
what fractions really represent, and the various representations and how they are all connected
- proper, improper and mixed number fractions and their representations
-
equivalent fractions and why they work
- using mental and calculator strategies to find the fraction of a number
-
adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with meaning
- applications of fractions to worded examples
The focus is on understanding first, not memorising rules.
Supporting different confidence and fluency levels
Students come in with different levels of number fluency - and that’s expected.
During the program, students are shown how to use a calculator as a support tool when needed, so they can:
-
focus on understanding fraction concepts
-
avoid getting stuck on basic arithmetic
-
build confidence while fluency continues to develop
As understanding improves, reliance on the calculator naturally reduces.
Program structure
-
Small groups (maximum 6 students)
-
90-minute weekly sessions
-
Fixed weekly day and time for the full 8-week program
-
Same group throughout, to build consistency and confidence
Practice & feedback
-
Students complete targeted practice between sessions using an adaptive platform that helps identify strengths, gaps, and progress over time.
- Weekly written feedback is provided, based on each student’s practice data, outlining what’s improving and what to focus on next
Optional individual support
-
Each student has access to two optional 20-minute 1-to-1 support sessions during the program
-
These sessions can be booked to address specific sticking points or misconceptions, if needed
-
They are designed to support the group program - not replace it
Between session support
- Students have access to a guided support tool to help them clarify instructions, reflect on feedback, and stay oriented between sessions.
- This support is designed to reinforce understanding and independence - not replace teaching or human guidance.
Who this program is for
This program is a good fit for Year 7–8 students who:
-
feel unsure or anxious about fractions or maths generally (could be a good starting point)
-
rely on rules but don’t fully understand them
-
lose confidence when questions look different
-
want stronger foundations for high-school maths
What students gain by the end
By the end of the 8 weeks, students typically:
-
feel more confident working with fractions
-
understand why methods work
-
make fewer careless errors
-
feel better prepared for percentages, ratios, and future topics that integrate fractions such as statistics, probability, algebra, rates and relationships between variables.
The goal is not perfection - it’s clarity, confidence, and steady progress.
Who is delivering the program?
Delivered by a secondary mathematics educator with 10 years experience supporting students through the critical Years 7–8 transition (and seeing the negative impacts in middle/senior years of fractions/decimals/percentages gaps).
Background includes:
- First Class Honours in Aerospace Engineering and Business Management
- Former renewable energy engineer and freelance business consultant
- Past Head of Maths and Science at a distance education school implementing many digital technologies to support learning by distance
- Experience teaching junior and middle school maths in the Northern Territory, with a strong focus on diagnosing and closing foundational learning gaps from primary and lower secondary.
- VCE Physics (3-4) and VCE Specialist Maths (1-2) teaching experience.
-
Extensive experience using digital tools to support both online learning and insight-driven offline activities.
Above all, this program is delivered by a teacher who cares deeply about students not falling through the gaps, and who focuses on rebuilding understanding before problems compound later.
Looking ahead
This 8-week program focuses specifically on fractions and their applications, because they underpin so much of Years 7–8 mathematics.
Future small-group programs are planned to build on this foundation, including:
-
Decimals and percentages
-
Ratios and rates
-
Algebra and proportional reasoning
Families who complete Fractions Reset will be well positioned to continue into these later programs if they choose - but there is no obligation to do so.
Each program is designed to stand on its own, while also forming part of a clear learning progression.
-
Program Commitment
Fractions Reset is an 8-week small-group program with fixed places and a set weekly time.
Because groups are formed in advance and places are limited, enrolment is for the full 8 weeks.
Payment can be made in full or split into instalments using Afterpay.
